Event Overview

Scott Riggs

Scott Riggs continues the Nextel Cup Series chapter of his racing career as he heads into his second season with MBV Motorsports and Valvoline Racing. Coming off of his rookie year, the Bahama, N.C. native is looking to improve in his sophomore season on the circuit and is searching for the same consistency he’s experienced at previous levels of competition.

Last year Riggs and crew chief Doug Randolph garnered one top five and two top 10 finishes during their first year in the Cup series, including a season high fifth-place result at Dover’s Monster Mile, one of the toughest tracks on the NASCAR schedule. The team also notched four top five and seven top ten starts.

In 2003 Riggs won two Busch Series races (Nashville, St. Louis) and contended for the series championship, until a first lap wreck during the season finale took him out of the running and forced him to a sixth-place finish in the points race. The personable driver was voted Busch Series Most Popular Driver in 2003 and, with two wins (Nashville, California), was the Raybestos Rookie of the Year in the series in 2002.

In 2001, Riggs opened the eyes of many as he found five victories in his first full season in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. He found that success after his late model team opted to take a truck to historical Martinsville Speedway and have a go at the Craftsman Truck Series race in 2000. Riggs' solid qualifying effort afforded the team a fifth-place start and his ninth place finish paved the way to his truck series seat.

Riggs’ racing career did not develop the way it did for many others. Before moving to NASCAR’s Late Model and Mini-Stock divisions in 1988, Riggs was a successful Motocross competitor. From 1984-1987 he collected over 100 wins and many honors, including the N.C. State Championship in 1986 and 1987, and a third-place finish in the 1987 National AMA competition.
