Richard Petty; The King. That just about says it all. Over the course of 32 years driving on the NASCAR Winston Cup circuit and a record 200 victories, The King has seen this sport grow from the dirt tracks of North Carolina to the brand new speedways like the Texas Motor Speedway. From real, drive them on the road stock cars, to the purpose built high performance models used today, it’s clear that The King’s impact on the sport of motor racing goes far beyond the scope of victory lane.
In fact, many would argue that The King has been, and continues to be, the guiding force that has turned NASCAR racing into the most popular form of motor sports in America today.
From humble beginnings in Level Cross, N.C. a young Richard often traveled with Mom and brother Maurice to watch father Lee win three Grand National (now Winston Cup) championships. While Maurice went to work on engines, in 1958 it was time for Richard to take to the track. Between winning his first race at the long gone Charlotte Speedway in 1960, and running his last race at the Atlanta Motor Speedway in 1992, The King’s record cannot be compared fairly.
- 200 Career Victories (Second is David Pearson with 105)
- Seven Winston Cup Championships (1964, 67, 71, 72, 74, 75, 79)
- Seven Daytona 500 Victories
- Winston Cup Series Rookie of the Year (1959)
- Twenty Seven wins in one season (1967)
And the list goes on.
Nine times The King has won the Most Popular Driver award. Everywhere he goes he can be seen signing autographs with his trademark cowboy hat and shades. But the main attractions are that smile and the way Richard feels about his fans. It’s an honest, heartfelt love for his fans and they feel his warmth and sincerity.
In fact, two very important things in Richard’s life, besides winning races, are his family and the fans. Every chance Richard has, he gives back more than he receives. Whether it’s a fund raising event for a local charity or an autograph for a fan Richard has always given the fans the credit for his long career. Saying that without them coming to the track every week there would be nothing.
