United States Auto Club (USAC) standout, J.J. Yeley, joined Joe Gibbs Racing in 2004.
He ran an A-B-C schedule, before stepping into the No. 18 NASCAR Busch Series car for the 2005 season where he finished 11th in the final standings. He posted his career-best NBS finish of second at Memphis in October of that season.
Late in the 2005 season, Joe Gibbs Racing annonced at Yeley's home track - Phoenix Int'l Raceway - that he would step up to the Cup Series in 2006 as the driver of the Interstate Batteries Chevrolet, replacing Bobby Labonte who left at the end of the year to join Petty Enterprises.
