Dale Earnhardt died on February 18, 2001 after he collided with the wall on the final lap of the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway. He was 49 years old. If you wrote an in-depth biography on “The Intimidator,” it could take up 50 pages…Earnhardt came close to a record-breaking eighth Winston Cup championship when he finished second in the points to Bobby Labonte…Won two races in 2000, one at Talladega Superspeedway, one at Atlanta…That gave him 76 for his career, which ranks him sixth on the all-time list…Won the Daytona 500 in 1998, which he said helped re-vitalize his career…Last Winston Cup championship came in 1994…Had six titles with Richard Childress Racing…Raced for the first time on a full-time basis with his son, Dale Jr., in 2000…Junior won as many races as his father and finished a respectable 14th in the points…Was the 1979 Winston Cup Rookie of the Year.
